Is a Chiropractor a Real Doctor?

A chiropractic physician is probably one of the healthcare practitioners of the most misunderstood in the medical profession. Through the years they have been looked at with suspicion by those who doubt that are full of doubts. In times past, they have been called quacks, or worse. This is due, in part, to see the narrow and limited public access to medical treatment - being that only the administration of prescription drugs and surgery performed.

It is unfortunate that most people believe that this is all there is to health care. No truth is that there is more to healthcare than drugs and surgery! A big part too!

Sad to say, but also some chiropractic patients do not have a really clear understanding of what is chiropractic. And for those who have not been to a chiropractor, most are completely misinformed to make up the profession. The fact is chiropractic is the largest form of drug free health care and form the third largest of any health care in North America.

What is Chiropractic?

The word "chiropractic" is a mixture of Greek words cheir (hand) and praxis (action) and means "done by hand." Chiropractic is an alternative medical system in the doctor takes a different approach from conventional medicine in diagnosing, classifying, and treating medical problems.

In essence, chiropractic focuses on the relationship between the structure of the body - primarily the spine - and body function. Doctors of chiropractic use hands-on therapy called manipulation (or adjustment) as their primary procedure.

Comparable to a MD?

So is the training of a chiropractor as rigorous as that of a doctor? The answer is a resounding, yes. Today's chiropractic doctor takes a broad educational background beginning with three years of pre-chiropractic studies. From there they advance to a four-year course of study. A chiropractic student spends so many hours in the study of human physiology as that of a doctor. Chiropractic programs require a minimum of 4200 hours of combined classroom, laboratory and clinical experience.

The difference between the education of an MD and a chiropractor is that a train MD in pharmacology and surgical procedures and trains in the care of the spine chiropractor.

Worth the cost?

Some would argue that it costs too much to go to the chiropractor. However, the opposite is true. The fact is that many times when a person is treated by a chiropractic doctor for a certain symptom, adjustments (treatments) result in a higher level of overall health and wellbeing. This leads to cut back on prescription drugs, which prevent the need for surgery, and slowing the aging process.

Those who benefit from chiropractic treatments see it as an important part of ongoing maintenance of their health, similar to that of regular exercise or visiting their local health spa. They now know the difference - how they felt before chiropractic treatments and feel much better now.

A study of patients of chiropractors in an association of independent physicians "found that, when asked if they would recommend their Doctor of Chiropractic to others, 95.5% of patients said 'yes. "1

A chiropractor is a doctor of the whole health is concerned not only about your symptoms, but your general state of well being. What your doctor of chiropractic can offer, no other doctor can. I have no doubt that a chiropractor is trained to help you achieve your own personal optimal health.
